The narrative follows Princess Sukanya, the daughter of King Sharyati, who crosses paths with Chyavan, a young ascetic (tapasvi) with a vow to right a wrong done to the Ashvini Kumars by Indra. Due to the twists of destiny, Sukanya accidentally blinds and causes Chyavan to age into infirmity, marrying him in his broken state. Refusing to let destiny break their spirits, Sukanya rises as a devoted wife to fulfill her husband's mission, restore his youth and eyesight, and bring the three worlds—Akash, Prithvi, and Patal—to their door.

This was the first of the two films based on the same mythological story directed by B.K. Adarsh, featuring his wife Jaymala as the female lead, and having the same title. The second film, released in 1970, featured Pradeep Kumar as the male lead and was produced by Jaymala. This film had Prithviraj Kapoor in the lead role and was produced by Adarsh himself.

Shakti Singh is a poor, hardworking boiler mechanic who lives a happy life with his wife Seeta, mother, and two sons, Arjun and Vijay. Shakti always falsely fights against injustice. Once he is falsely implicated for this, and he has to go to jail. Seeta is forced to be a courtesan instead of the money owed by Shekhar, so a misunderstanding creates a rift between Shakti and Seeta; insulted Seeta leaves the house. A ruthless gangster named Don is killed during a scuffle with the police. Since only DSP D'Silva knows of this incident, he recruits Vijay, who is a spitting image of Don, to replace the original Don and infiltrate his gang. D'Silva plans to nab the entire gang, but when he dies during a raid, the secret that Vijay is not Don is also buried with him.

The film blends classic tales from the Shiv Puran and the Ramayana. It begins with the celestial powers of Sati Anusuya, which lead the trinity of gods (Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh) to test her virtue, resulting in them temporarily turning into infants at her ashram. Later, the narrative transitions into key events from the Ramayana. Goddess Parvati (Uma) doubts whether Lord Rama is truly an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. She tests Rama by disguising herself as Sita, but Rama respectfully addresses her as Mother, proving his divinity. The second half follows the core events of the epic, including the battle with Ravana, Sita's agnipariksha (trial by fire), her exile, the birth of Lava and Kush, and her eventual return to Mother Earth.
