Kyushu'nun sakin bir kasabasında yaşayan 17 yaşındaki Suzume, yolda "bir kapı arayan" genç bir adamla tanışır. Suzume adamı dağlardaki harap bir binaya kadar takip eder ve yıkımdan kurtulmuş gibi bağımsız, bozulmamış duran bir kapı bulur. Suzume görünmez bir güç tarafından çekildiğini hisseder ve kapıya uzanır. Çok geçmeden Japonya'nın her yerindeki kapılar ardı ardına açılmaya başlar. Ancak açılan kapılar, diğer tarafta yer alan felaketi engellemek için kapatılmalıdır. Böylece gizemli kapıların çağırdığı Suzume'nin "kapıları kapatma yolculuğu" başlar.

Günün birinde nereden geldikleri belli olmayan solucan görünümlü uzaylılar yeryüzüne iner. İnsanların burun ve kulaklarından bedenlerine sızarak taşıyıcı bir bedene yerleşirler. Artık insan görünümlü bu parazitler insan ırkının arasında yaşamaya başlamıştır. Sıradan bir lise öğrencisi olan Shinichi Izumi (Shota Sometani) bir gün bu yaratıkların saldırısına uğrar. Yaratık beynini ele geçiremez ancak sağ eline yerleşip kontrolü ele alır. Izumi bu parazitlerin dünya etrafında işlenen sayısız cinayetin sorumlusu olduğunu düşünmekte ve gerçeği bildiği için de kendini sorumlu hissetmektedir. Bu arada Ryoko Tamiya (Eri Fukatsu) Izumi'nin gittiği okulda öğretmen olarak göreve başlar. O da bir parazit tarafından ele geçirilmiştir ve Izumi'yi gözlemlemek üzere gelmiştir. Film 1988-1995 arasında Hitoshi Iwaaki tarafından çizilen "Kiseiju" adlı mangadan uyarlanmıştır. Manganın 24 bölümden oluşan "Kiseijuu: Sei no Kakuritsu" adlı animesi de mevcuttur.

Aoshima, a police detective working in the Bayside Precinct, is continually frustrated by the hierarchy and red tape that plague the system. Tokiwa stars as Tamura Nozumi, with a cheerful outlook in life, always choosing to believe in everyone. Toko (Fukatsu Eri), decides after she turns 30 that she is all but ready to give up on any future career hopes or romance, so she turns to the bottle for comfort. She knows that this isn't the best thing, but can't find the strength right now to do anything except choose the easy way to do things. This causes her to start getting down on herself. Luckily though, she doesn't give up hope completely, and tries to take things as they come. Which proves to help to some degree. Suddenly one day, a guy by the name of Kotaro (Tsutsumi Shinichi) comes along. Like Toko, Kotaro hasn't had much luck at work either. Even so, this is still the same guy that Toko liked when she was younger.
