Filmde, Polonya'da Nazi işgalcilere karşı bir zamanlar zorunlu olarak işbirliği yapmış olan Milliyetçi güçlerin ve Komünistlerin aralarındaki bu ittifakın artık çatırdamaya başladığı 2. Dünya Savaşı'nın son günlerinde, taşralı Milliyetçi bir militan olan Maciek (Zbigniew Cybulski) etkili bir Komünist lideri öldürmekle görevlendirilir. Görevi sırasında kaldığı otelde hayata dair farklı şeyler hissetmeye başlar, bir seçim yapıp sonuçlarına da katlanmak zorunda kalacaktır.
