1978-1990 yılları arasında 53 cinayet işlemiş olan Romanovich Chikatilo; Rusya'nın tek seri katili. Film bir çiftçinin tarladaki otları temizlerken bir ceset görmesi ve kararan ekranda "bu film gerçek olaylardan esinlenmiştir" yazısıyla başlıyor. Sonraki sahnede ceset, filmdeki esas oğlanımız Teğmen Viktor Burakov’a teslim ediliyor. Tam Burakov otopsiye başlarken içeriye 6 ceset daha getirilir. Defalarca bıçaklanmış, gözleri oyulmuş, göğüsleri ve cinsel organları kesilmiş, üzerlerinde sperm olduğu belirlenmiştir. Burakov kurula durumu rapor eder. Ağzından "seri katil" ifadesi çıkar çıkmaz sert bir tepkiyle karşılaşır. Çünkü "seri katil" Komünist Parti yetkilisine göre "Batıya özgü yozlaşmış bir fenomendir" ve Komünist Sovyetler'de böyle bir durum söz konusu olamaz.
