Once upon a time there was a Greek king, Kratos, who was very strict and kind-hearted. His gentle wife Arete, however, was loved by all the people. One day, the king was persuaded by his devious advisor to re-enact an ancient law, according to which the first child of the royal couple had to be a boy. When Arete gave birth to a girl, she was in great need. In order to present the king with an heir to the throne, she agreed to swap her daughter with the gardener's son...

Snow-White and Rose-Red, two very sweet girls give shelter to a bear in distress one night. In the spring the bear wanders off again, but rips his fur on the door on the way out, which makes the girls notice a shimmer of gold shining through. Later, the girls help out a dwarf in the woods, who has got his beard caught in first a fallen tree, then his fishing gear, and the third time they rescue him from a bird of prey.

Es muss nicht immer Kaviar sein is a TV adaption of a novel of the same name by Austrian author Johannes Mario Simmel. Directed by Thomas Engel Siegfried Rauch walks in the footsteps of O. W. Fischer who played the protagonist "Thomas Lieven" already in 1961, just one year after the bestseller had been released. The series is unique for providing a little cooking show at the end of each episode. The book also includes recipes because "Thomas Lieven" is an accomplished amateur cook.
