Filmin bahsettiği kişi Choi Bae-dal (daha sonra ismini Masutatsu Oyama olarak değiştirmiştir 1923-1994) dünyada 11 milyondan fazla öğrencisi olan Kyokushin Karate okulunun kurucusudur. Aslen Koreli olan Choi Bae-dal estetik anlayışın hakimiyetindeki japon karate ekolünü adeta yerle bir etmiştir. Çünkü onun karatesi en kısa yoldan karşındakinin kemiklerini kırma prensibine dayanır. Film ilginç bir deneme ile bu prensibi karakterin öz yaşam öyküsüne de yedirmeye çalışmış. İkinci dünya savaşı öncesinde Kore japon işgalinde ve Choi Bae-dal japon ordusuna alınıp savaşıyor. Sonrasında japonyada yaşamını kazanmaya çalıştığını görüyoruz ancak gerek askerdeyken gerekse de sonrasında bir koreli olarak ikinci sınıf vatandaş.
