Bir grup astronot, çok uzun bir yolculuğun sonunda uyanarak, bilinmeyen bir gezegene iniş yapar. Burada konuşmayı bilmeyen ilkel mağara insanları ile, konuşan, avlanan, adeta insanla yer değiştirerek medeniyet kurmuş maymunlar yaşamaktadır. Grup dağılır, astronotlardan George Taylor, insan avcısı maymunlar tarafından esir edilir. Aslında Taylor, yeraltındaki tünellerde yaşayan bir grup insan tarafından esir tutulmaktadır. Kendilerince tuhaf bir din geliştirmiş ve telepatik güçleri de olan bu insanlar, maymunların Yasak Bölge'yi istila etmek üzere olduğuna inanmaktadırlar.
