Begun in 1944/45, finished and released in 1949, this is a biography of the composer Carl Michael Ziehrer, who overcomes hypersensitivity in competitive situations which leads initially to failures in both career and romance.

In order to impress a socially superior woman with money, an unsuccessful insurance agent commits sophisticated fraud: he concludes contracts with fictitious people and collects the insurance sums after their "death". However, his first fictional persona is his downfall.

Crown Prince Don Carlos reunites with reformer Marquis Posa, who urges him to govern Flanders and broker peace. Carlos confesses forbidden love for his stepmother, Queen Elisabeth, who bids him serve Spain instead. Intrigue by the jealous Princess Eboli and Duke of Alba convinces King Philip II of betrayal. Posa sacrifices himself to save Carlos, but the king ultimately imprisons his son and hands him over to the Inquisition.

The bark-beetle has invaded the big forest of the general, just as a fatal illness has into the body of its owner. The general is suffering from eye cataract, preventing him from seeing the symptoms of the trees' decline, just as he is unable to see his own rottening. His wife and the writer discuss these circumstances for two scenes, until the general discovers the fact himself in the third one. Now he is going to take appropriate action.
