Bir gün kilisenin mezarlığında iki kaçak kürek mahkumu ile burun buruna gelir. Mahkumlara evden yiyecek ve zincirlerinden kurtulabilmeleri için alet temin eder, ancak mahkumlar tekrar yakalanırlar. İki mahkumdan vicdanlı olanı evden kaybolan yiyeceği kendisinin çaldığını söyleyerek suçu üstlenir ve Pip’i suçlanmaktan kurtarır. Artık Pip ile aralarında bir bağ kurulmuştur.
