Carl Winslow è un ufficiale della polizia di Chicago: inizialmente è un sergente, poi viene promosso a tenente ed infine diventa anche capitano. Vive insieme alla sua numerosa famiglia (la moglie Harriet, i figli Edward, Laura e Judith, la madre Estelle, la cognata Rachel e il nipote Richard) in una grande casa a Chicago. Ma il personaggio probabilmente più conosciuto della serie è il loro vicino di casa, Steve Urkel: questi è un pasticcione clamoroso, commette immancabilmente disastri ed è innamorato (non corrisposto) di Laura, figlia di Carl. Molto nota è la sua frase tipica: "Sono stato io a fare questo?", che dice ogni volta che combina un disastro. Il personaggio di Steve è stato introdotto solo dopo il 12º episodio, con apparizioni brevi e sporadiche; l'immediato gradimento da parte del pubblico convinse la produzione a incentrare di più l'attenzione sul giovane innamorato e combinaguai.

Another World is an American television soap opera that ran on NBC for 35 years from May 4, 1964 to June 25, 1999. Amen is an American television sitcom produced by Carson Productions that ran from September 27, 1986 to May 11, 1991 on NBC. Set in Sherman Hemsley's real-life hometown of Philadelphia, Amen stars Hemsley as the deacon of a church and was part of a wave of successful sitcoms on NBC in the 1980s which featured entirely or almost-entirely black casts.
