16 ottobre 1989: una catastrofica pioggia di meteoriti contenenti un minerale radioattivo, la kryptonite, si abbatte sulla cittadina di Smallville, nel Kansas. Due coniugi, Jonathan e Martha Kent, trovano in un campo un bambino nei pressi di una astronave e decidono di prenderlo con sé e crescerlo come un figlio.
