Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts. Kristina und Karl-Oskar leben im südlichen Schweden, in einer kleinen Gemeinde in Småland. Ihnen gehört ein kleiner Grundbesitz, dessen Boden allerdings nahezu unfruchtbar ist. Die Zeiten sind ohnehin hart: Schlechtes Wetter führt zu schlechten Ernten und zu Hungersnöten. In der Vorweihnachtszeit 1849 kommt es zu einem folgenschweren Vorfall, als Anna, das erstgeborene Kind, vom Hunger geplagt heimlich von der zum Abkühlen abgestellten und als Festmahl gedachten Gerstengrütze nascht und sich dermaßen daran überisst, dass sie daran verstirbt. Nun lässt sich Kristina von Karl-Oskars Plänen überzeugen, in die USA auszuwandern. Zusammen mit anderen, die sich zu der Fahrt entschlossen haben – darunter ein vor religiöser Verfolgung fliehendes Ehepaar und ein Mann, der seiner Ehe zu entkommen versucht – begeben sie sich auf ein klappriges Segelschiff, auf dem sie nach zahlreichen Mühen und Gefahren zehn Wochen später schließlich ihr Ziel erreichen.

Jompa is unemployed - and not keen on getting a job. He still lives with his parents who are tired of his attitude about employment and regular hours. Jompa and his friends spend their time at nightclubs, cafés and doing petty crimes. While playing poker, Jompa becomes indebted to the criminal Kalle Lund. Of course, Jompa is unable to pay, but Kalle gives him a tip: an old fetcher has always a lot of money at home, and if Jompa could get his hands on the money, his troubles would disappear... "Colorful Raftsmen" - The three brothers Nils, Lars and Ivar are members of a raftsmen team. Ivar feels that he does not really belong there, he prefers a little poaching andante a lot of flirting with women.

At a summer-evening dance a young girl meets a man who tells her he is a doctor. They go off together, and after that she never sees him again. She learns that she is pregnant and inquires about him at various hospitals, with no success. She reads of his engagement and becomes acquainted with another girl with a situation like her own.
